Lost Passport — Non-Australian Citizens

1. File a police report first. Queensland Police maintain a visible presence across the Gold Coast tourist strip, including a police beat right in Surfers Paradise; for a non-urgent lost-property report you can also use Policelink (131 444) or Queensland Police’s official online reporting service.
2. Because Gold Coast has no foreign consulates of its own, your next step is contacting your country’s nearest representation — most are concentrated in Brisbane, with full embassies based in Canberra. Australia’s official directory of foreign consulates, maintained by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, is the right place to find your specific country’s nearest office.
3. Bring your police report reference number, any photo ID you still have (a driver’s licence or a photo of your passport’s data page), and proof of travel such as a flight itinerary.

Major Hospitals Near the Main NYE Area

• Gold Coast University Hospital — 1 Hospital Boulevard, Southport. Public hospital with a full 24-hour emergency department, and the closest major hospital to Surfers Paradise, sitting directly on the light-rail line. General enquiries: 1300 744 284. See the hospital’s official page.
• Gold Coast Private Hospital — 14 Hill Street, Southport, adjacent to the university hospital. Private hospital with its own 24/7 emergency department. See the hospital’s official site.

Both sit in Southport, a few light-rail stops north of Surfers Paradise. As a visitor, expect the public hospital to bulk-bill Medicare-eligible patients only, and the private hospital to require payment or proof of travel insurance upfront. Whether you’re Medicare-eligible depends on your passport: Australia has a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with 11 countries — Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom — and passport holders from those countries can access medically necessary public hospital treatment through Medicare while visiting, generally with a co-payment. It only covers urgent, medically necessary care (not things like dental, ambulance transport, or elective treatment), so it isn’t a substitute for travel insurance even if your passport qualifies. Gold Coast is broadly considered a safe, family-friendly destination for NYE, and the fireworks precincts themselves are heavily patrolled given the crowd size. The main things worth knowing: Surfers Paradise’s Cavill Avenue and Orchid Avenue nightlife strip sees a real increase in alcohol-related disturbances late at night, particularly after midnight on NYE itself — it’s not dangerous in the way a genuinely high-crime area would be, but it’s worth staying alert there after dark. • The “scratchie” timeshare pitch. Street promoters near shopping centres and theme park entrances hand out free scratch-and-win cards that always reveal a prize — a TV, a cruise, a holiday voucher — conditional on attending a timeshare sales presentation. The presentation itself is a long, high-pressure sales pitch, and the “prize” is often far less valuable or harder to redeem than advertised. Politely decline the scratchie entirely; if you’re curious about timeshare as a genuine product, research it independently rather than through a street promotion.
